What is AV1?
AV1 is the leading telepresence robot for school absence.
The technology consists of three main elements:
- The small 'robot' or avatar that goes to school on behalf of the absent student
- The AV1 app, available from the App Store and Google Play store (making is accessible on smartphones, tablets and Chromebooks)
- AV1 Admin, a desktop portal for teachers and adminstrators to quickly and simple manage all their AV1s in one place
Students and teachers love AV1 because it is both more secure and more inclusive than normal video streaming. See our website for all the features for privacy, safeguarding and lesson engagement.
AV1 best suits students who are absent due to medical needs (long term illness, chronic health conditions, injury) and mental health (anxiety, EBSA, school refusal).
Recommended Usage
We recommend measuring impact after weekly use of AV1 for a full term (~6 weeks).

Very accessible for lessons, but does not help with interaction and socialising skills when at home all the time.
Richard Marrett found AV1:
- Does not reduce attainment gap“No gap bridged yet as pupil has missed education for over 18 months.”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“Being able to access lessons from home, so can get involved with interaction.”
- Does not significantly improve behaviour or wellbeing“Cannot comment as not attend school or leave their home.”
Jun 2024
Connectivity is increasingly becoming more and more of an issue, signal drops out during lessons and the AV1 is not always providing clear audio or visuals for the student. When it does work it is a 10 out of 10 but just not 100% reliable unfortunately.
Amy found AV1:
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“students unable to attend class for various reasons medical/social etc.. have access to live lessons and keep up to date with learning. Students do not get behind and have learning gaps on top of already difficult situations.”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“Students not in the classroom can engage with questioning, asking for help and working with peers in groups.”
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing“Students normally unable to access the learning environment are suddenly included and feel a part of the class.”

Difficulty setting up. Primary schools do not have technicians and it took a long time. It is also difficult because you can only have one user on one robot. We have two children in the same class that need to access it and we have to have two AVs. Also it is a real chore to delete a user and set up the AV for the next child.
Emma Murray found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“No to soon”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“No too soon”
- Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing

My son used it daily when in hospital for a transplant, (2.5months) my other son used one whilst we were all having to isolate prior to the transplant so he could still attend school. We now lend it out to other children who are in hospital or long term treatment free of charge and raise fund for the monthly costs. I say 'irt provides a little slice of normal, when everything else is different and scary'

AV1 allows a child to feel safe and to continue to access the curriculum whilst they are managing significant needs which means they cannot attend school in person. AV1 is easy to use. The pupil can increase participation at their own pace. You can track pupil participation. The AV1 also allows the pupil to access enrichment activities but remotely, for example, choir club
Hayley found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“It allowed the pupil to continue to access the curriculum remotely with input from the class teacher”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“The pupil is able to continue to work alongside and with their peers and be involved in group activities/learning”
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“The pupil was suffering with mental health but having AVI allowed them to keep school routines and still share experiences with peers”

AV1 is fantastic in that it allows the child at home to connect with the class daily. The child can see friends and chat to them but also take part in the lesson when there is time for talking and also time for listening. Making a connection has had a profound impact.
Sophie Tait found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“The child in question uses AV1 to connect with peers”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“The student is able to communicate in live time”
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing“While at home, the student is making time for learning”

- Does not significantly increase student collaboration“students is beginning to interact through AV1 but this is rare and only via movement, not voice.”

Although we don't use it as much as we could, due to the nature of the pupil, I feel that there is a lot of potential for pupils with anxiety.
Fran Garvey found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“It is only being used once per day so no evidence yet.”
- Slightly increases student collaboration“No. NOt yet.”
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing“Yes. It allows a pupil to access lessons and speak with friends.”

It is a very useful resource to have and helps the child at home be involved in their learning. It enables them to interact with their peers and have access to the teaching within the classroom. However, it take a while for the children in class to get used to it and was at times more of a distraction for them.
Emily Brown found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“Has helped with maths as the child has been able to join in with the activities but has struggled with English and reading.”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“The other children have enjoyed being able to speak to the child and engage with them in class discussions.”
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“It helps most with wellbeing as it allows the child to have some interaction with their peers who are in class.”

The AV1 has been a positive addition, there are some areas creating challenges that are a concern though; internet access, colleague acceptance and parental support

- Does not significantly increase student collaboration“The child has an ASD condition and it can affect the collaboration possibilities”

It is a great device, but it hasn't been used enough (due to user illness) to make an impact worth anything higher. I can see the positives of it and its potential, but haven't yet witnessed.
Ben Smith found AV1:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“Difficult to say just yet. User has not attended many lessons with the AV”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“In a maths lesson, the user was able to discuss the work with a peer.”
- Does not improve school processes“Not applicable just yet”
- Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing“Again, not enough time to tell. Although it has allowed pupil to build confidence in relation to the school evironment”
- Slightly improves attainment“Too early to say. Not used AV enough”

I would have liked a screen to be able to see the student's face from time to time - for that I had to use Teams.

We have now purchased 4 devices as they have really helped students unable to attend through illness and supported reintegration back in to the classroom for those struggling to go in person to the lessons through anxiety
Kate found AV1:
- Does not significantly reduce teacher workload“Not having to email/contact students the lesson instructions separately if they aren't able to access the lesson in person.”
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“We have had one student unable to access school for 3 months and it allowed her to stay on top of her core lesson content to ensure she doesn't fall behind. The student has also been able to attend intervention lessons to close the gap in Maths and English that was due to previous absence.”
- Slightly improves school processes
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“It has allowed several students to feel part of their classes whilst unable to attend. To keep up to date with their friends and part of the chat during break and lunch. She told us that it really helped keep her mind of what she was potentially missing out on and still feel part of 'the action'”
- Slightly improves attainment

In a secondary school the logistics of moving it between different classes can be difficult, but otherwise it is great.
Lucy Burbridge found AV1:
- Moderately reduces teacher workload“Without the AV1 teachers would have to prepare alternative work for the student, or find a different time to explain it to them individually.”
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“Without the AV1 the student would be falling behind significantly.”
- Slightly improves school processes
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing
- Moderately improves attainment“Yes it is definitely having an impact - it has allowed her to keep up with some of the work when she is not in lessons, and allowed us to bridge the gap when we are not able to provide an LSA to take her to lessons.”
